This Lady Washington Tall Model Ship is a
handcrafted, museum quality model built by some
of the finest craftsmen in the world. In 1750 a
trading sloop was built on Essex River,
Massachusetts. It began with short runs, and
twenty years later it was renamed from Washington
to Lady Washington. Perhaps it had something to
do with the revolutionary war. According to Mark
Olson it, "If you look at the registries of that era
you see a glut of vessels named "Washington".

She was renamed in order to cause a distinction between herself and the other vessels. That is why we
are having so much trouble with her earlier life. The ship was too easily mixed up with other vessels.
America fur trader Captain Robert Gray discovered the Columbia River in 1792, naming the major river
of the Pacific Northwest after his ship, the Columbia Rediviva. Accompanying him was another ship, the
sloop Lady Washington. Nearly 200 years later, a group of Aberdeen, Washington ship enthusiasts
approached the state of Washington about constructing a replica of the ship for the state’s 1989
centennial. The replica’s keel was laid in 1985 and she was launched four years later.
Today, the Lady Washington is an ambassador for the state, visiting major west coast ports
throughout the year. She’s also appeared in major Hollywood movies, most recently in 2003’s Pirates of
the Caribbean. Crewed by professional sailors and volunteers, the Lady tells the story of the state’s
early maritime growth and development. She also conducts sail training and short public cruises.
