The Chilean Navy Training Ship “La Esmeralda” was officially delivered to Chile in 1954. The name
“Esmeralda” evokes two naval events that constitute true landmarks for the Chilean Navy; the capture
of the Spanish frigate “Esmeralda”, and the Naval Action at Iquique. These actions represent the most
glorious episodes of Chile’s naval history, a time which bears witness to the love and sacrifice of her
seafaring crew, values which are hitherto instilled on board the ships today. Six ships have carried
this illustrious name. In 1820, during America’s emancipation from Spain, Chile sent a naval
squadron, under the command of Admiral Lord Thomas Alexander Cochrane, which transported the
Freedom Expedition of Peru. In response, Peru’s Viceroy mobilized a fleet composed of the Spanish
frigate “Esmeralda” (1791), together with 13 other ships and 32 gunboats, to challenge the Chilean
squadron. Between the night of November 5th and the dawn of November 6th 1820, forces led by
Admiral Cochrane penetrated the bay of El Callao in Peru. In an audacious action, they captured the
frigate and a four-gun boat, removing them from the port under battery gunfire. The second ship by
this name, in honor of the frigate captured by Lord Cochrane, was a corvette. Its construction was
begun in December 1854 in the Enrique Pritchard shipyards of Northfleet, located in Kent, England.

blueprints, thorough research and some of the finest materials in the world. Each model ship is
built using exotic woods such as Rosewood, Mahogany, Teak and other exotic tropical wood
from around the world. The workmanship and beauty constitute the excellence of each of
